Bloody New American Gods Trailer Shows Off More Characters. Still No Gillian Anderson.

Starz has released a very bloody new trailer for Bryan Fuller’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods. We see a lot more here but still no Gillian Anderson!

Anderson is playing Media in the series and so far this is the only look we’ve gotten is this…

…and this.

I’m dying to see her in action! However, American Gods is chock–full of amazing actors: Ian McShane, Orlando Jones, Emily Browning, Crispin Glover, Cloris Leachman, Peter Stormare, and Kristin Chenoweth just to name a few. Can I just say, clean Ricky Whittle is so weird to me. I’m used to seeing him covered in grime on The 100.

In case you’ve missed it, the official Instagram of the series has been producing short character teasers lately.

“Family is who you survive with when you need to survive. Even if you do not like them.” #AmericanGods #STARZ

A post shared by American Gods (@americangodsstz) on

They’re also doing that connecting images thing I recently saw the Harry Potter Instagram doing.

The crew was at SXSW recently and they posted their panel online if you’re interested.

The eight-episode first season of American Gods is set to premiere on April 30, 2017 on Starz.

Star Wars Rebels Producers Explain Why That “Twin Suns” Fight Made Perfect Sense

Star Wars Rebels still has two episodes to go in Season 3 but the latest, “Twin Suns,” was pretty huge. The producers discussed their thought-processes behind the episode including the big decisions, lightsaber battles, and deleted scenes.

[SPOILER ALERT, obviously.]

They’ve teased it since the midseason trailer but this past weekend Obi-Wan Kenobi and Maul finally came face to face and it was pretty clear one of them wasn’t walking away from the fight. Considering Darth Vader took out Obi-Wan in Star Wars, well, Maul’s time had finally come.

The episode found Ezra traveling to Tatooine to find Obi-Wan after Maul tricked him once again with the holocron. Long story short, Obi-Wan had to come out of hiding to help Ezra which led Maul right to him. And then just before things really got started, they were over. Maul was dead at the hand of Obi-Wan Kenobi, closing a thread that started in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.

In an official behind-the-scenes chat executive producer Dave Filoni reminded everyone they brought back Maul to life, from what everyone assumed was certain death, in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and so he felt they should wrap things up. “In a way, by bringing him back to life it kind of robbed Obi-Wan Kenobi of this victory in this moment in his life so I thought it’s a way to bring that back,” he said.

And about that much-hyped battle, many were surprised at how short the duel actually was. While it was certainly in keeping with the Master fight we saw in A New Hope between Vader and Obi-Wan, there’s more to it.

“When you’ve fought someone many times, and you’ve faced off, you kind of know each other’s moves. So if you think about it the build up to this confrontation and the actual lightsabers hitting each other is actually longer because they’re basically playing it out in their heads,” said co-executive producter Henry Gilroy. “And the amazing thing is, the move that Maul tries after the initial exchange, he actually attempts the move that killed Qui-Gon Jinn. He tries to basically bash him with the hilt.”

Filoni added some more context:

If you talk to a lot of people that sword fight they’ll tell you, people that are very good don’t have long fights. It’s very quick. And so that scene it’s an homage to the Seven Samurai. I think on one level people would be excited to see another prolonged lightsaber fight but I just never really saw the confrontation that way because to do that is to say the characters just don’t have growth. Yes, it’s exciting as an audience member but it’s not a really believable thing. Storytelling has to evolve.

Producer Carrie Beck echoed Filoni’s sentiments on the satisfaction involved in a larger, longer fight. “We never entered into this story trying to think about how satisfying that battle should be,” she explained. “It really became about what was the genuine intention of this moment. And knowing where these two men are at this point in their lives. I think it’s important for us, even though on the timeline we aren’t to A New Hope yet, to think about what we know of Obi-Wan in that movie and to work backwards in some way to make sure that the character’s progression charts appropriately.”

I think it played out just as it should have but I will say I’m still surprised Lucasfilm decided to end his story in the animated series considering the films they’re planning. I’m sure there’s a lot that could be mined for live-action if they so choose but this is his definitive end.

Beck says they discussed whether this was something they should pursue. “Going into this I know we had a really rigorous conversation around the idea of whether or not it’s something we should be doing,” she said. “And especially knowing the journeys of both those characters, really making sure that that moment was being constructed from a place of what the story demanded, not from a place of something we all personally wanted to see.”

And if you’re getting hung up on the last exchange of dialogue between Obi-Wan and Maul, Lucasfilm story group’s Pablo Hidalgo has some thoughts to consider:

Speaking of Obi-Wan, while James Arnold Taylor has voice the character in the past they needed to go more Sir Alec Guinness for this episode since the character is older. He was played by Stephen Stanton in this episode (who also does a great Grand Moff Tarkin, aka, Peter Cushing).

Sam Witwer, who voices Maul, considers it a “tremendous privilege” to have played the character this whole time. “I don’t think it’s the end of the character in terms of people learning more about him,” he said. “I think down the road we’ll probably see more but in terms of this story, and probably my association with the character, this is it.”

Filoni mentioned there was originally more to the episode explaining there were definitely deleted scenes (“Probably more deleted scenes than have ever been done,” said Filoni. “I had to cut it for time. So much of it.”) plus a version of the episode where Kanan goes along with Ezra to Tatooine.

“Zero Hour” (Parts 1 and 2), the last episodes of the season, will air on Disney XD March 25th.

Doctor Who Writer Throws Being Human Star’s Name in the Ring For Future TARDIS Inhabitant

He doesn’t have any say in the final decision but Toby Whithouse has some thoughts on who should play the next Doctor on Doctor Who. And it’s someone he knows well – Being Human’s Damien Molony.

With Peter Capaldi about to say goodbye to the TARDIS (as well as Steven Moffat), it’s time to choose a new Doctor. I haven’t really been keeping up with the rumors concerning the casting because they’re exhausting and probably won’t turn out to be true in the end but this one caught my eye today.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Doctor Who and Torchwood writer, and Being Human creator/writer Whithouse threw out a few names. “Damien Molony, who was on Being Human, I’ve always thought he’d be terrific,” he told them. “He’s a fantastic actor. My ideal choice would either be Damien or Chiwetel Ejiofor, who I think would be absolutely terrific.”

While this is the first time I’ve heard Molony be suggested, Ejiofor’s name has been mentioned quite a bit with regards to Doctor Who. (He was thought by many to be the actor Neil Gaiman alluded to turning down the role in 2013.) Many have also been hoping for a woman to take on the classic role this time around with names like Tilda Swinton, Gwendoline Christie, Olivia Colman, and Hayley Atwell being floated.

I was a Being Human fan from almost the very beginning. On this blog I watched it go from a smaller sci-fi show to getting renewed for several seasons, through its cast change, to the Syfy adaption (which turned out pretty great in its own right with an entirely different cast) on through the end.

That said, I don’t see Moloney in this role. He’s talented but comes off a bit too close to Matt Smith for me. But if upcoming showrunner Chris Chibnall would like to keep it in the family, might I suggest actor Lenora Crichlow? She played Annie the ghost in Being Human and Cheen in the Doctor Who episode “Gridlock.” She also voiced the Seventh Doctor’s companion in an alternate timeline audio play.

Who would you like to see take on the coveted role?

Mrs. S (Maria Doyle Kennedy), Sarah (Tatiana Maslany), and Kira (Skyler Wexler)

BBC America released the first official images from the fifth and final season of their hit series Orphan Black just as production wrapped.

Yesterday producer Mackenzie Donaldson posted the cast and crew’s very last call sheet… and it says “Swan Song.” I’m not crying, YOU’RE CRYING! Actually no, I am crying. I was all in on this show from the start and I’m incredibly emotional about it ending. I interviewed Tatiana Maslany and co-creator/director John Fawcett back in 2013 before the first season aired, which feels like eons ago.

And indeed, Donaldson’s tweet meant the end was near for them. Orphan Black has officially wrapped production.

Here’s the synopsis from BBC America:

This season, the walls close in on Sarah when nearly all her sestras and their allies are brought to heel by Rachel. Even more harrowing is that her daughter Kira has joined them. With the threat of Neolution having carte blanche access to clone biology, Sarah is desperate to gain control, but realizes she must change tactics to pursue a long game. Protecting both her families, and the host of clones she’s yet to meet, Sarah and those still fighting the fight will uncover the missing pieces of the insidious conspiracy – and finally learn the story behind their origin. Despite the great risk, the fight of her life will either set her and her sestras free, or see them meet their end…

And here are the first images…

Rachel (Tatiana MAslany) and Ira (Ari Millen)

Donnie (Kristian Bruun), Alison (Tataina Maslany), and Felix (Jordan Gavaris)

Ferdinand (James Frain)

Felix (Jordan Gavaris), Sarah (Tatiana Maslany), Mrs. S (Maria Doyle Kennedy)

Rachel (Tatiana Maslany) and Sarah (Tatiana Maslany)

I can hear Sarah now, “I don’t want your bloody tea!”

Sarah Manning (Tatiana Maslany)

Delphine (Evelyne Brochu) and Cosima (Tatiana Maslany)

The full cast and co-creators of Orphan Black will be at PaleyFest LA tomorrow, and Season 5 debuts Saturday, June 10th at 10/9c on BBC America. Check out the very short teasers they’ve released so far here.

[UPDATED] Cover Shoot Reveals Twin Peaks Cast 25 Years Later…

We’ve got our first look at David Lynch’s Twin Peaks cast 25 years later and I’m salivating. “It’s a feature film in 18 parts,” Lynch told Entertainment Weekly.

Entertainment Weekly released this exclusive first look at the cast in costume for their cover shoot. The last time we got a teaser for the Showtime revival series I expressed gratitude that we weren’t being given too much before it aired. I’m sure we’ll still get a full trailer before it premieres on May 21st but this look at the cast back in action really gets me excited.

Wendy Robie (Nadine Hurley), Everett McGill (Big Ed Hurley), and James Marshall (James Hurley).

Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer and Madeleine Ferguson), David Lynch, Kyle MacLachlan (FBI Agent Dale Cooper), and Sherilyn Fenn (Audrey Horne).

Mädchen Amick (Shelly Johnson), Dana Ashbrook (Bobby Briggs), and Peggy Lipton (Norma Jennings).

Of course this is just a fraction of the enormous cast of 217 Lynch hired for the show and EW teased more to come when the issue is released tomorrow.

[UPDATE] Here’s a 40-minute feature People put together. Warning, there are spoilers for the original series at that link (and this shortened version below) if you haven’t watched.

[UPDATE #2] EW has released a few more pictures, including David Duchovny’s Agent Denise Bryson.

Here’s Lynch himself (Agent Gordon Cole) and the late Miguel Ferrer (Agent Albert Rosenfield).

Kimmy Robertson (Lucy) and Harry Goaz (Deputy Andy).

And last but not least, Michael Horse (Deputy Hawk).

Ping! Ping! Mother Box Brings Us the New Justice League Trailer

We caught a glimpse of Zack Snyder’s Justice League movie at San Diego Comic-Con last year but this is Warner Bros.’ first official trailer for the film.

The trailer features a whole lot of action and not a lot of dialogue but it does feature a few characters besides the main “League” of Ben Affleck (Batman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Ezra Miller (The Flash), and Ray Fisher (Cyborg).

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

We also catch glimpses of Amber Heard (looking interesting underwater as Mera), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), J.K. Simmons (Commissioner Gordon), Billy Crudup (Henry Allen/Barry’s dad), and Joe Morton (Silas Stone, Cyborg’s dad). We also get what appears to be a whole lot of Amazons and a whole lot of Parademons from Apokolips.

I think the trailer looks par for the course, we’re likely to get exactly what we expect from this. I will say, while you all know how much I love Batman, I also really love when other characters poke fun at him so the scene between him, Gordon, and Aquaman was one of my personal highlights.

The other was Mera.

Justice League is set for release on November 17, 2017.

Earlier this month, Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer celebrated its 20th anniversary and now Entertainment Weekly has brought everyone back for an amazing photo shoot.

Entertainment Weekly (who just did a great Twin Peaks issue) has posted a bunch of articles celebrating the Scoobies. Here’s the cover photo article, and the limited edition covers, an amazing series of portraits (some below), some Buffy/Angel/Spike gossip, and a special 44-minute video (autoplays).

If this were 20 years ago, these would be taped on my wall by now by the way. I was obsessed with Buffy. Here are some of those portraits I mentioned:

Michelle Trachtenberg, Kristine Sutherland, and Sarah Michelle Gellar

Alyson Hannigan

Nicholas Brendon

Charisma Carpenter

Amber Benson, Alyson Hannigan, and Seth Green

Emma Caulfield

Alexis Denisof

Anthony Stewart Head(‘s actual portrait, sadly no Eliza Dushku either.) [Edit: Gellar mentioned he was busy doing a play in London on Twitter, Dushku looks to be filming somewhere currently.]

Gellar told EW, “I’m so incredibly proud of what we all created. Sometimes you need distance to really understand the gravitas of that. I appreciate everything about that job. As an actor, all you ever want to do is leave your mark — you want to do something that affects people.” Oh, boy did it.

Some of the crew also shared behind-the-scenes shots…

BBC Reveals New Doctor Who Companion Bill Is Gay!

Doctor Who Season 10 is set to debut on April 15th as Peter Capaldi and Steven Moffat’s final season and Pearl Mackie’s first. We don’t know much about new companion Bill yet but the BBC revealed she’s openly gay.

The BBC spoke to Mackie about the news. “It shouldn’t be a big deal in the 21st Century. It’s about time isn’t it?” she told them. “”[Being gay] is not the main thing that defines her character – it’s something that’s part of her and something that she’s very happy and very comfortable with.”

Though the language in the piece calls Bill the first “openly gay” character, of course this isn’t the first time the Doctor’s companions have been queer. John Barrowman’s Captain Jack Harkness is considered pansexual/omnisexual while Clara Oswald and River Song have both mentioned relationships with men and women (neither of which we saw on screen). Regardless, this is a nice step towards better representation, something both Moffat and his casting director have discussed over the last year with regards to their actual casting.

“That representation is important, especially on a mainstream show,” Mackie told the BBC. “It’s important to say people are gay, people are black – there are also aliens in the world as well so watch out for them…I remember watching TV as a young mixed race girl not seeing many people who looked like me, so I think being able to visually recognise yourself on screen is important.”

More and more we’re seeing folks talk about how important it is to see yourself reflected on screen. The Doctor Who spinoff Class (which debuts next week here in the U.S.) features a gay character and the BBC piece mentioned Bill’s in-show reveal will be her second line of dialogue. I can’t wait to see where things go from there.

Hasten the Regeneration? The New Doctor Who Season 10 Trailer Leaves Little Doubt

Robots. Rivals. Regeneration? The BBC is teasing quite a bit here even though we know Peter Capaldi’s time on Doctor Who is nearing its end. Are we ready?

I just realized I’ve been writing a lot about Doctor Who lately! In case you missed it, Omaze is giving you a chance to have breakfast with seven Doctors and… new companion Bill is openly gay!

With the new season starting very soon, BBC (and BBC America) are ramping up their marketing. Here’s the latest:

This is the gateway to everything that ever was or ever can be. This is Doctor Who Season 10.

Get ready to have the time of your life with the Doctor, Bill, and Nardole Saturday, April 15th at 9/8c on BBC America followed by the premiere of the new spin-off, Class.

The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) is an alien Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey who travels through all of time and space in his TARDIS with his companion. Instead of dying, the Doctor is able to “regenerate” into a new body, taking on a new personality with each regeneration.

And if you didn’t cut out before the very end, you got this very familiar scene…

I really, really wish Capaldi had stayed at least one more season. I would have loved to see what a different showrunner could do with him. I’ll be sad to see him exit.

Midland Circle Security Elevator B Reveals Marvel’s The Defenders

Thanks to some footage from Midland Circle Security Elevator B, we have eyes on Marvel’s The Defenders. Plus a Netflix premiere date.

Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist will combine their efforts on August 18, 2017 to take down a villainous Alexandra (Sigourney Weaver) when The Defenders debuts. Comic-Con last year gave us a teaser but using old footage, this new video shows Charlie Cox, Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter, and Finn Jones going to work.

The video also slyly revealed the release date with the time stamp in the upper right corner as well as a viral site with the IP address in the left corner. It leads to NYBulletin.com, a fake newspaper tumblr account you can follow for updates and stuff.

In related news, remember when Ritter discussed the lack of Jessica Jones action figures? There’s a new one on the way from Loot Crate. But it does not come “complete.”

Don’t forget to call her if you’re in trouble.

Marvel Announces New Warriors TV Comedy Featuring Squirrel Girl

$

Is the world ready for eating nuts and kicking butts? We shall soon see. Marvel has put the greenlight on a New Warriors live-action comedy series set to feature none other than Squirrel Girl.

Back in August of last year, TV Line had a report saying Marvel was working on a New Warriors comedy with Squirrel Girl. Both Marvel and ABC Studios declined to comment at the time but The Hollywood Reporter had the official exclusive this morning saying the show will have a home on Freeform (previously ABC Family) which is owned by Disney.

“In a competitive situation with other cable and streaming outlets bidding, the younger-skewing Disney-owned cable network has handed out a straight-to-series order for New Warriors, the comic book powerhouse’s first 30-minute live-action comedy,” THR reports. “Cougar Town and Scrubs alum Kevin Biegel is near a deal to pen the script and serve as showrunner on the comedy.” And the official summary:

New Warriors revolves around about six young people with powers living and working together. With powers and abilities on the opposite end of the spectrum of The Avengers, the New Warriors want to make a difference in the world … even if the world isn’t ready. With Freeform focused on a group dubbed “becomers” — those experiencing a series of firsts in life including first loves and first jobs — New Warriors explores the journey into adulthood, except in this world, they’re not quite super and not yet heroes and the guys can be as terrifying as bad dates.

You may recall Marvel already has another superhero project set for the network, a Cloak & Dagger adaptation starring Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph in the lead roles. THR says New Warriors will be a 10-episode comedy set to launch in 2018 and it will star Marvel’s Squirrel Girl. It’s slightly odd considering that while she’s a fan of them, she’s not been a part of the New Warriors team (they’re like a younger version of The Avengers). I hear this project had been in development as an ensemble for many years. The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, written by Ryan North and illustrated by Erica Henderson, kicked the character into super popularity since and is likely the direct reason for her prominence in the announcement.

For a while, a Squirrel Girl film rumor had been making the rounds. I was never sure if Marvel had serious plans but the fans certainly went nutty for it. Comedic actor Anna Kendrick had expressed interest in the role and director Edgar Wright was all for it. More recently a fans took to the idea of Stranger Things and Riverdale actor Shannon Purser getting the role. While Marvel’s Phase Four is fairly wide open at the moment (at least in public knowledge), I think Squirrel Girl on TV rules out her addition to the film universe.

“Marvel’s New Warriors have always been fan favorites and now particularly with the addition of Squirrel Girl, they are Marvel Television favorites as well,” Marvel head of TV Jeph Loeb said. “After the amazing experience we’ve had with Freeform on Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger we can’t think of a better place for our young heroes.”

Karey Burke, executive VP of programming and development at Freeform spoke a bit to THR saying “Our head of development wore her Squirrel Girl hat in the pitch, which may have put us over the top. We’ve been longtime fans.”

The more we got to know Marvel and the more comfortable they got with us as the home for their young adult IP, these conversations became easier. They started to see our strength with young adults and together we could create a pipeline for content that was specific to our audience that felt younger than what they’re doing at the other channels. I wanted to be in business with Marvel when I first got here but I didn’t want to chase them just to chase them. It was important to both of us to find the right characters that felt like they would speak directly to Freeform’s audience. The Avengers wouldn’t work here but the about-to-be-Avengers works here.

And asked whether the two Freeform shows would connect like other Marvel TV projects have, Burke said: “If you know these two properties, they’re not particularly connected. There are many degrees of separation with where they fall in the Marvel universe. But anything is possible with Marvel. Their tones are so wildly different. Cloak is this angst-filled achingly beautiful heartfelt romantic drama. And Squirrel Girl is a balls-out comedy.”

Burke added that they hope Squirrel Girl will become an “iconic heroine for audiences.” You can read more at The Hollywood Reporter.

Doctor Who Debuted New Companion Bill in the Season 10 Premiere. What Did You Think?

$
0
0

This past weekend, BBC and BBC America aired the Season 10 premiere of Doctor Who featuring new companion Bill. How did you enjoy Pearl Mackie and Peter Capaldi together?

This isn’t a full-on review, more of an open thread for fans to chat, but I did want to say I enjoyed the new episode. I found Bill interesting to watch and I liked that the Doctor was staying in one place, on Earth, for a while incognito (sort of). I’m still not sold on Nardole’s role. We find out Bill is living with her foster mom (played by Jennifer Hennessy who previously starred in Doctor Who’s “Gridlock”) and that the Doctor has visited her birth mother some time in the past.

Once we learned Bill was gay, many of us were concerned with how that might be explored considering showrunner/writer Steven Moffat isn’t the best at handling delicate topics. One particular aspect of the decision was brought to the forefront at the end of the episode when I realized we’re likely going to be experiencing a lot of the “Bury Your Gays” trope this season. Not that companions are finding love left and right on the show typically, but now, when Bill does, there’s a higher chance of a queer character dying. While it’s great to see more LGBTQ+ characters, I’m not sure the exchange is one I’m personally comfortable with under Moffat.

Speaking of which, while it was nice the show revealed Bill to be gay straight away, the way in which Moffat wrote it included fat shaming. I saw fans begin to raise concerns as the episode aired in the U.K. and was wondering exactly how it went down. Later on that night I watched the Doctor ask Bill why she’d been attending his lectures considering she’s not enrolled in the school. She dives into a story:

My first day here in the canteen, I was on chips. There was this girl, student, beautiful, like a model, only with talking and thinking. She looked at you and you perved. Every time. Automatic, like physics. Eye contact, perversion. So I gave her extra chips. Every time. Extra chips. Like a reward for all the perversion. Every day, got myself on chips, rewarded her. Then finally, finally she looked at me, like she noticed, actually noticed all the extra chips. Do you know what I realized? She was fat. I’d fatted her. But that’s life, isn’t it? Beauty or chips. I like chips. So does she so that’s ok.

To which the Doctor responds, “And how does that in any way does that explain why you keep coming to my lectures?” And she says, “Yeah, it doesn’t really, does it? I was hoping something would develop.”

We’ve seen Moffat time and time again ruin a perfectly good episode by making a tasteless, unnecessary joke. This dialogue is shaming a lot of women actually, and as is clear in the following dialogue, it served no purpose whatsoever. Unless you count making Bill look unlikeable?

That ugliness aside, I enjoyed the episode. It had some good scares, introduced a companion with a lot of potential, and has a lot of fans excited for what’s to come. Here’s some behind-the-scenes from the episode.

And teasers for next week’s episode:

Class also premiered her in the U.S. the same night but I haven’t had a chance to watch yet. Feel free to discuss that first episode in the comments as well, just please note “Class spoilers” before your comment so folks can skip over if need be.

The First Teaser For David S. Goyer’s Krypton TV Show Is Here

[UPDATE: Sorry, looks like the trailer wasn’t meant to be released yet. It’s been pulled everywhere.]

I haven’t been super enthusiastic about David S. Goyer and Syfy’s Krypton television show and I’m not sure the first teaser has changed my mind. But it is intriguing.

We first heard about this project last year before Supergirl had gotten renewed for a second season so that was certainly part of my annoyance. But I’m generally not a fan of Goyer and I was hoping to see more projects with a diverse lead get greenlighted before more stories about white men. Here’s the synopsis.

Syfy’s Krypton, the much-anticipated Superman prequel set two generations before the destruction of the legendary Man of Steel’s home planet, will follow Superman’s grandfather — whose House of El was ostracized and shamed — as he fights to redeem his family’s honor and save his beloved world from chaos.

Cameron Cuffe stars as (young) grandfather Seg-El while Georgina Campbell (soon to be seen in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword) plays Lyta Zod. Game of Thrones actor Ian McElhinney is Seg’s grandfather Val-El.

The series is said to take place around 200 years before Man of Steel. Damian Kindler (Sanctuary, Sleepy Hollow) is showrunner and written/executive produced by Ian Goldberg. There’s no premiere date as of yet though the teaser says Krypton will debut this year.

Marvel & Freeform Introduce YA Superheroes in the First Cloak & Dagger Trailer

Surprise! Your first Cloak & Dagger trailer is here and it’s super YA. Bonus Squirrel Girl/New Warriors character info inside!

The series just recently announced its stars, Aubrey Joseph as Tyrone Johnson/Cloak and Olivia Holt as Tandy Bowen/Dagger, but Marvel and Freeform released this first look today as well as announced other actors involved.

“Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger” is the story of Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) – two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers which are mysteriously linked to one another. Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to engulf others in darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than apart, but their feelings for each other make their already complicated world even more challenging. The network has ordered ten one-hour episodes slated to debut early 2018. “Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger” stars Olivia Holt, Aubrey Joseph, Andrea Roth, Gloria Reuben, Miles Mussenden, Carl Lundstedt, James Saito and J.D. Evermore. The series is co-produced by Marvel Television and ABC Signature Studios. Joe Pokaski (“Underground,” “Heroes”) serve as showrunner and executive producer; Jeph Loeb (“Marvel’s The Punisher,” “Marvel’s The Defenders”), Marvel’s head of Television, and Jim Chory (“Marvel’s The Punisher,” “Marvel’s The Defenders”) also serve as executive producers. Gina Prince-Bythewood (“Love & Basketball”) directed the first episode.

And here’s their first promo photo…

Meanwhile, earlier USA Today revealed the first character details for the previously announced New Warriors TV show featuring Squirrel Girl. Being more of a DC than a Marvel, I haven’t heard of anyone on this list. But hey, there’s a lesbian!

Doreen Green (Squirrel Girl)
Superpower: “The powers of a squirrel, the powers of a girl” (is acrobatic, strong, can fight, can talk to squirrels)
Doreen is a totally empowered fangirl. She is a natural leader—confident and tough, but not innocent. Doreen is bouncy and energetic and her greatest quality is her optimism… She has faith in others and inspires people to believe in themselves. She also takes her pet squirrel, Tippy Toe, everywhere.

Craig Hollis (Mister Immortal)
Superpower: Cannot die. Ever. Maybe. So he says.
The team troublemaker and lothario… Craig is kind of like “The Most Interesting Man Alive,” except he’s more cocky than confident and at times, charmingly grumpy. Although Craig’s superpower seems amazing, he hasn’t made use of it at all—he’s lazy and figures if he has all the time in the world to learn how to fight, what’s the rush?

Dwayne Taylor (Night Thrasher)
Superpower: None
Dwayne is a local celebrity “hero” with his very own YouTube channel. Brilliant, strong, noble, and maybe a bit full of himself, Dwayne is a shameless self-promoter and entrepreneur. But he also deeply believes in justice — at least his version of it. Dwayne hides the fact that he comes from a really rich family because he’s afraid he’ll lose his street cred.

Robbie Baldwin (Speedball)
Superpower: Can launch kinetic balls of energy
Robbie grew up watching Quinjets take off from Avengers Tower and loves the idea of being a hero. He’s an impulsive and immature people-pleaser with a misplaced sense of confidence. Although you would think throwing kinetic balls of energy would be awesome and effective – his are completely out of control.

Zack Smith (Microbe)
Superpower: Can talk to germs
Zack is a shy hypochondriac whose ability nearly makes him a telepath — the germs tell him where you’ve been, what you ate and who you hung out with. It’s impossible to keep secrets around him. He’s a big sweet guy the team takes under their wing, and they help him find and grow his own confidence.

Deborah Fields (Debrii)
Superpower: Low level telekinetic; trickster
Deborah is proud, funny and quick witted. Confidently out as a lesbian, Deborah has experienced deep loss in her personal life as a direct result of super “heroics.” She can take care of herself, or at least says she can. She’s the one who calls people on their BS and has no fear of putting her opinions out there.

“She is openly hopeful and earnest and sweet and optimistic, but smart and very determined that she can make a difference, too,” showrunner Kevin Biegel told USA Today of Squirrel Girl. “She knows she’s great and if you’re not going to get on board with her, she’ll leave you in the dust.”

They also put out this teaser image which is kind of silly considering it’s for a live-action show but it’s cute nonetheless.

This show, also set for Freeform, is lined up for ten 30-minute episodes and is set to debut in 2018.

It’s official, Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny will return to the X-Files for more episodes this year.

You may remember creator Chris Carter discussing the future of the series last year. At that time he mentioned Fox wanting more episodes but that they had a lot to figure out schedule-wise. Today, Variety reports they’ve made it official.

Fox has ordered a new 10-episode revival of “The X-Files,” the classic television sci-fi drama that returned to the network’s air with a limited series last year. The new installments — billed as a continuation of the [6]-episode 2016 run, will premiere during the 2017-18 television season. The production will again reunite original stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson with series creator and showrunner Chris Carter, and is slated to begin production this summer.

They’ve already got a teaser image too!

“Iconic characters, rich storytelling, bold creators – these are the hallmarks of great TV shows. And they are some of the reasons why The X-Files has had such a profound impact on millions of fans worldwide,” said David Madden, President, Fox Broadcasting Company. “Chris’ creativity, along with the brilliant work of David and Gillian, continue to propel this pop culture phenomenon, and we can’t wait to see what fresh mysteries Mulder and Scully uncover in this next chapter of The X-Files.”

No word yet on a possible return for mini-Mulder and Scully, aka Miller and Einstein, played by Robbie Amell and Lauren Ambrose. Just remember to have fun this time and don’t make Anderson fight for equal pay, huh?

Locke & Key Set For New Series at Hulu With Doctor Strange Director

Locke & Key was first published in 2008 and has been trying to unlock the door to an adaptation for a while. The latest news is good! Hulu has decided to pick up the project with some great names attached.

I’ve been a fan of the series from the very beginning. It’s an amazingly crafted horror story with gorgeous art and it just so happens to revolve around a series of mysterious keys, something I’m a big nerd for. Skelton Crew Studio, who make amazing collectibles for a lot of comic series, have brought them to life and they live very happily on my shelves.

We’ve seen an attempt at a Locke & Key TV show before. Fox did a pilot with some great actors involved but sadly it went no further. Then there was talk of a series of films but that also never surfaced. Last year we had news that IDW Entertainment was working on bringing writer Joe Hill and artist Gabriel Rodríguez’s comic series to life. But at that point they didn’t have a network (or streaming outlet) attached. Hill told me then he was writing the pilot. “IDW is backing it to the hilt, with plans to film not just the pilot but an entire first season,” he said. “The show will both follow the original series as well as expand upon it considerably… While also throwing in some twists to keep fans of the comic off balance.”

Well yesterday The Hollywood Reporter announced Hulu is giving it a pilot order. Carlton Cuse (Lost, Bates Motel) will serve as showrunner while none other than Doctor Strange’s Scott Derrickson will direct the episode. IDW president David Ozer, Lindsey Springer, and Hill will executive produce. THR writes, “IDW packaged the project with the goal of securing a straight-to-series order for the property. The package was taken out to bidders — including Netflix, HBO and FX — last month.”

Here’s a bit of what the creators had to say online after news broke…

By the way, Skelton Crew had this to say about the project in their newsletter yesterday: “We are SO proud and excited and happy for Joe, Gabe, and all the folks at IDW who’ve had a hand in this amazing series! We cannot wait to tune in!” Coincidentally, they’ve rolled out some new items recently. One of them is a key BUT its origin is based in Hill’s book N0S4A2. The Key to the Candy Cane Gates is available for pre-order now and through May 8th each piece includes a hand-numbered limited edition tag signed by Hill and artist C.P. Wilson III (The Stuff of Legend).

Share Your Thoughts on Doctor Who’s “Smile”

The second episode of Doctor Who Season 10 was titled “Smile,” but did it make you grin? Share your thoughts with fellow Whovians here!

Last week’s discussion is here in case you missed it. I thought “Smile” was a good, simple adventure episode. While I appreciate continuity and nods to the past, and Pearl Mackie’s Bill will undoubtedly see her own story grow, it’s actually quite a relief to watch an episode that’s not bogged down by what came before.

Artificial intelligence as an indigenous culture was a very interesting idea, too bad we didn’t see what came next as it would likely be a lot more interesting than what came before. I’ll also admit to being relived Nardole wasn’t along for this adventure and I’m even more curious as to what’s in the vault. Any theories yet? Share your thoughts on the episode in the comments and feel free to discuss this week’s Class as well. Just note “Class spoilers” before your comment so folks can skip over if need be.

And here’s some videos you might be interested in. Behind-the-scenes…

Good News: Young Justice Season 3 & Live-Action Titans Officially a Go! Bad News: New Streaming Service Required

As promised last year, Cartoon Networks Young Justice will get a Season 3. Known now as Young Justice: Outsiders, it will air on Warner Bros’ new digital service along with the live-action Titans.

In early 2016 we found out the proposed Titans live-action series was not moving forward as a series on TNT and it seemed that might have been the end of it. Warner Bros. has a lot going on television these days, mostly on The CW, but they also recently branched out to the Syfy channel for their Krypton show (NBC for Powerless, AMC for Preacher, and Fox for Gotham). While we were waiting to hear where Young Justice Season 3 would land, we were only partly right in assuming it would land on a streaming service.

Deadline has the exclusive this morning but Warner Bros. just sent out their official release.

Warner Bros. Television and DC Entertainment today announced that executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns, Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter are teaming up for the all-new live-action drama series “Titans,” which will debut in 2018. Additionally, Warner Bros. Animation’s “Young Justice: Outsiders,” the highly anticipated third season of the popular “Young Justice” series, is also ramping up for its first mission next year.

Both fan-driven series are in early stages of production and will air exclusively on a DC-branded direct-to-consumer digital service in 2018. Operated by Warner Bros. Digital Networks Group, the new digital service will deliver an immersive experience designed just for DC fans.

Yes. That’s right. Another service you need to subscribe to. It’s getting increasingly expensive to be a nerd.

Deadline writes:

The DC-branded direct-to-consumer digital platform, in the works for the past several months, marks the second major new service launched by Warner Bros Digital Networks — the division started last year with the mandate of building WB-owned digital and OTT video services — following the recently introduced animation-driven Boomerang. The DC-branded platform is expected to offer more than a traditional OTT service; it is designed as an immersive experience with fan interaction and will encompass comics as well as TV series.

You may recall Warner Bros. recently announced a Dick Grayson, aka Nightwing, film for their movie universe which makes the description of Titans interesting indeed.

“Titans” follows a group of young soon-to-be Super Heroes recruited from every corner of the DC Universe. In this action-packed series, Dick Grayson emerges from the shadows to become the leader of a fearless band of new heroes, including Starfire, Raven and many others. “Titans” is a dramatic, live-action adventure series that will explore and celebrate one of the most popular comic book teams ever.

Not the first time WB has adapted a character on the small screen and big screen with different actors at once (The Flash). The release says the show will be written by Goldsman, Johns, and The CW’s DCTV executive producer Greg Berlanti. Here’s the summary for the upcoming Young Justice.

In “Young Justice: Outsiders,” the teenage Super Heroes of the DC Universe come of age in an animated world of super-powers, Super-Villains and super secrets. In the highly anticipated new season, the team faces its greatest challenge yet as it takes on meta-human trafficking and the terrifying threat it creates for a society caught in the crossfire of a genetic arms race spanning the globe and the galaxy. Equally praised by critics and viewers for its impressive visuals and rich storytelling, “Young Justice” reached more than 25 million unique viewers in each of its two seasons on Cartoon Network. This passionate fan support set the stage for the new third season.

And here’s a logo they released…

Sam Register is executive producer on this one with Brandon Vietti and Greg Weisman producing. No word yet on the cost of this new service or when it will actually launch.

Review: Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale Is a Horror-Filled Wake Up Call

I’ve seen a lot of scary movies in my time. Nothing comes close to the sheer dread I was filled with while watching Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale.

The Handmaid’s Tale, based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 dystopian novel, starts streaming today on Hulu. Even though I was granted access to screeners a while ago I kept putting off writing about it. Why? Every time I thought about it, I got scared. It’s not a “horror film” but it might as well be, and a finely executed one at that.

Adapted from the classic novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism in its militarized “return to traditional values.” As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (Elisabeth Moss) is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate the world. In this terrifying society, Offred must navigate between Commanders, their cruel Wives, domestic Marthas, and her fellow Handmaids – where anyone could be a spy for Gilead – all with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.

Orange is the New Black’s Samira Wiley also stars with Joseph Fiennes and Yvonne Strahovski. To say the adaptation does the original text justice is an understatement. The first three episodes were available to the press prior to being released on Hulu and I, perhaps stupidly, decided to watch them all in a row. I would not recommend binging The Handmaid’s Tale, you’re going to need to decompress after. Here were my initial thoughts.

Unlike a lot of adaptations, main character Offred’s internal narration is included in the series. (Hannah Sole at Pajiba talks more about the changes from the book if you’re interested.) I’m glad they kept it because the story’s power comes from understanding what this vision of the world means to an individual, not just how things appear from the outside.

It’s an incredibly uncomfortable watch, and that’s the point, but it was almost too much for me. The creeping, quiet dread of the situation being presented to the audience is palpable. There is gross abuse of women by men in power and I have no doubt viewers will experience mental or physical distress over it as I did. This will be compounded if, like me, you’re queer.

One of the most obvious changes to the book is we expand from Offred’s view. We see a few other instances of what this new order is doing to people and it’s just as ugly. Women beaten down, mutilated, and sexually assaulted is the norm and the effects are traumatizing. But in Gilead, you can’t show you’re affected by it. You’re forced to adapt to the most heinous situation imaginable because the only alternative is death.

The series is brilliantly filmed and acted. Silence speaks volume, as do the slightest changes in facial expressions. It’s power is heightened because of the time we’re in. Read this excerpt from the book and tell me it doesn’t sound familiar.

I only read The Handmaid’s Tale recently and had to pause many times because of how close to home it was. For those who read it years ago it was already a frightening warning sign but also far enough removed that no one was really worried it would happen. But now we are and it’s almost incomprehensible. This could happen and it could happen fast. Don’t believe me? The comments on the series’ trailer by those unaware it was written in 1985 were innumerable and just happened to coincide with news of a room full of men deciding what was best for women. We have very good reason to be scared.

The adaptation gets to the point a lot quicker than the novel which is probably a good idea considering how little action occurs. Some is added, or explored further in the first three episodes and there’s some anachronistic music choices that didn’t click for me. It’s a valuable story but one I wish wasn’t so true-to-life. While watching the episodes I wondered how the series would be accepted. Would many be turned off by how close the story is to our current state of affairs? Will they watch purposefully for that reason? Would men understand the absolute terror we have seeing it unfold? Will it finally get across to some people why feminism is so important?

There’s new episodes available to me now but I honestly don’t know if I want to, or can, continue watching The Handmaid’s Tale. Writing this review brought back all the horrible feelings this provocative series instilled in me. Then again, I subconsciously wore red today.

American Gods Altar: “The Bone Orchard”

Neil Gaiman’s American Gods adaptation debuted last night on Starz. Were you inclined to worship at its altar or blaspheme? Come discuss “The Bone Orchard” with us!

I had been putting up thoughts about the new episodes of Doctor Who on Monday mornings but since I didn’t get around to watching this weekend and American Gods premiered I figured I’d switch it up. Feel free to chat about Doctor Who over here if you’re so inclined.

Bryan Fuller and Michael Green wrote, and David Slade directed, “The Bone Orchard” which starred Ricky Whittle in the lead role of Shadow Moon and Ian McShane as Mr. Wednesday. I’ve watched three episodes of the season so far thanks to Starz screeners an have been blown away by the visuals. Fuller, always known for his delicious mind, is really getting to stretch his legs here. My biggest concern is those who haven’t read the book may have no idea what the hell is going on. I sure didn’t when I started reading it a few months ago. It’s a meandering journey and one that takes a lot of detours. I’m very interested to see how the show will develop certain characters for the sake of extending the series past one season.

That said, it was really amazing to see folks freaking out over that Bilquis scene on Twitter last night…

What did you think? Share your thoughts on the first episode of American Gods in the comments! If you’re going to refer to plot threads in the book, please preface your comment with “BOOK SPOILERS.”
